Hydroflux Awarded Significant Biosolids Thermal Treatment Project in New Zealand
March 5, 2026
The Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) treats sewage generated from Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata regions with the final fully treated effluent being discharged out to the Cook Strait.
Biosolids generated from the process are dewatered using centrifuges and are dried using an existing rotary drum dryer prior to transport to the Silverstream landfill.
Wellington Water, on behalf of Hutt City and Upper Hutt City, are replacing the plant’s dryer in order to improve resilience and reliability, and help support the Hutt Valley’s future growth.

Hydroflux was recently awarded the design, installation and commissioning supervision of the new dryer package. The scope includes the dewatered sludge feed hopper and pumping system, belt dryers with condenser units, discharge screws, heat exchangers, key instrumentation, site supervision during construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, performance testing and operator training. Two HUBER BT18 belt dryers were selected to meet the maximum duty of 40,000 tonnes per annum.
“Across ANZ, each year some two million tonnes of dewatered cake is produced from sewage treatment, and dealing with this valuable byproduct is a key topic amongst water authorities. Drying is the first step in an advanced biosolids process and is typically required upstream of processes such as carbonisation, pyrolysis or incineration. The Seaview project is our third contract for thermal drying, and we are looking forward to working on this contract. Globally HUBER are leaders in biosolids drying and have delivered over 100 dryer packages to wastewater treatment facilities in Europe, Middle East and USA. It is clear that water utilities worldwide are looking to unlock the hidden potential of biosolids, be it producing Class A biosolids, biochar or phosphorus recovery,” says John Koumoukelis, CEO of Hydroflux.
Hydroflux can provide a full range of thermal drying solutions using HUBER’s range of belt, solar and disc dryers. Hydroflux provide complete turnkey packages including O+M services, or tailored supply packages for dryer system. To learn more please contact our dryer team on
