Sludge Acceptance Systems – Removing Unwanted Solids whilst Quantifying Discharge Volumes

June 2, 2026

Some 1.6 to 1.8 million septic systems are in operation across Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, providing treatment to unsewered communities. Septic tanks require regular pump out to remove settled sludge – the frequency depends on the size of the tank and connected users.

Many Water Authorities and Councils accept tankered septic sludge from pump outs. It is common for septic sludge to be discharge into the wastewater treatment plants inlet works. Septic sludge is thick and contains a high level of rags, plastics and other material.

Sludge Acceptance Systems provide an effective method for removing this unwanted material and via a contractor identification system built in the automation/controls, allows the water authority or council to measure the discharge volumes to enable tracking and hence, billing.

The Bottleneck

  • Septic sludge is very thick and contains a lot of solids
  • It is also variable in solids load
  • Fluctuating discharge volumes during tinkered discharge
  • Downstream issues due to high concentration and solids load
  • Selecting a screen that can handle the material

RotaShield® Sludge Acceptance Plants

  • Heavy duty drum design – copes with high solids and screenings load
  • Handles variable load due to internally fed drum design with unique inlet suited for septic sludge
  • Well proven in Australia and New Zealand applications
  • Removes unwanted debris from septic sludge prior to discharge into the treatment plant
  • Can handle septic sludge solids loads from 1 to 10% dry solids

Design Build

  • Hydroflux can provide a complete solution inclusive of mechanical equipment, site construction works and controls/automation
  • Alternatively we can work for EPCs for large projects

RotaShield® has been specifically developed for handling septic sludge with high solids loads. It is an internally fed drum screen with a heavy duty design that provides a high surface for screening out debris. It is available in several diameters and comes with either 6 or 10m perforations.
