Lamella Separators – An Underestimated Solution for Clarification

October 16, 2025

In many water and wastewater treatment applications, lamella separators are often overlooked in terms of their performance, reliability, and long-term value. Hydroflux has supplied lamella separator technology across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific for decades, demonstrating that simple, well-engineered solutions can deliver exceptional results.

A lamella separator operates on a simple principle: wastewater flows through a series of inclined plates, which dramatically increase the effective settling area. As the flow slows, solids settle onto the plates and slide down into a sludge hopper for removal. The clarified water passes upwards and over a weir, ready for downstream treatment.

The underestimated advantage of this technology lies in its compact footprint and high hydraulic efficiency. A lamella separator can achieve the same clarification performance as a conventional settling tank many times its size. This makes it ideal for sites with limited space, retrofit projects, and applications where low maintenance is a priority.

Hydroflux lamella separators are applied across many industrial sectors for both water and wastewater clarification. They are commonly used as a primary solids removal stage or as the core process component of a trade waste treatment plant. When combined with chemical dosing, they can achieve significantly improved solids capture and higher quality effluent.

Despite these strengths, lamella separators are often overlooked in favour of more complex and much larger clarification systems. Yet in many cases, they represent the most practical and economical solution.

By delivering proven Hydroflux lamella separator systems, backed by local expertise and service, industries and councils alike can gain significant operational and cost benefits from a technology that too often goes underestimated.
